Breaking the Silence: Spreading Sanitary Napkin Awareness

Introduction:

In many parts of the world, menstruation continues to be a topic shrouded in silence and shame. Lack of awareness and access to menstrual hygiene products, such as sanitary napkins, often leads to adverse health effects and social stigma for women and girls. However, we, Angikar Paribar is working tirelessly to break these taboos, empower women, and promote sanitary napkin awareness. Our aims to shed light on the importance of this crucial work and the transformative impact it has on the lives of women and girls.

The Menstrual Taboo:

From cultural myths to social norms, the menstrual taboo has persisted across various societies. This silence surrounding menstruation often leads to a lack of information and understanding about menstrual hygiene management. Many women and girls, particularly in low-income communities, resort to using unsanitary alternatives like rags, old clothes, or even leaves, risking infection and compromising their overall health. The first step towards breaking this taboo is to encourage open conversations and raise awareness about menstrual health.

Role of Angikar Paribar:

Angikar Paribar is a non-profit organization currently working for Sanitary Napkin Awareness (Dishari) camps at Patrasayer Block under Bankura district. Our female members work at the grassroots level to educate women and girls about menstrual hygiene practices, proper usage of sanitary napkins, and the importance of maintaining good menstrual health. They conduct 4 camps every month and also provide free napkins to them. We collaborate with schools, community centres, and healthcare facilities to provide accurate information, distribute menstrual hygiene kits, and conduct workshops on menstrual health management. We also install sanitary napkin vending machine at three high schools (PGHS, PBGDI & BHS) also provided free sanitary napkins for female students.

Empowering Women and Girls:

Access to affordable and hygienic menstrual products like sanitary napkins is essential for ensuring the health, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls. Our work towards improving access to sanitary napkins by setting up production units, training local women in manufacturing techniques, and establishing distribution networks in underserved areas. By engaging local women in these initiatives, also contribute to income generation and economic empowerment, enabling women to become self-sufficient and break the cycle of poverty.

Breaking Stigma and Taboos:

One of the critical objectives of sanitary napkin awareness campaigns is to challenge the deep-rooted stigma and shame associated with menstruation. We organize awareness sessions, seminars, and community dialogues to debunk myths, address misconceptions, and normalize conversations around periods. These initiatives help eliminate the embarrassment and discrimination faced by menstruating women, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

Access to Affordability:

For many women and girls, accessing sanitary napkins is a challenge due to their high cost or unavailability in remote areas. We are working towards sanitary napkin awareness also focus on promoting affordable and sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions. We are trying to collaborate with local communities, government organizations, and corporate partners to establish low-cost manufacturing units, distribution networks, or subsidized programs. By making sanitary napkins accessible and affordable, we ensure that no woman is forced to compromise her health or education due to inadequate menstrual hygiene management.

Angikar Paribar not only focus on immediate relief but also strive to create sustainable solutions for menstrual hygiene management. we advocate for improved sanitation facilities in schools and public places, promote the use of eco-friendly menstrual products, and support initiatives that ensure the proper disposal of used sanitary napkins.
